A Personal History Begins

Records and Reputation
Service accumulated
Wu Dawang builds a record of honors, Party membership, and exemplary labor. These achievements make him legible to the army as a useful soldier.
Identity dependent on institutions
His hopes for promotion and city life depend on official recognition. The same system that records his progress can later determine what parts of his history remain visible.
The Division’s Watchword

Amnesia Announced
A new institutional need
As the division prepares to vanish, the novel says that amnesia becomes its watchword. Personnel and memories must be reorganized alongside units.
A life caught in the process
Wu Dawang is absent during much of the change and does not understand the forces shaping it. Institutional forgetting begins before he can grasp what has been lost.
A Formal Exit

A Useful Public Memory
Heroic account
Officials describe Wu Dawang as an exemplary servant of the people and publicly honor him. This carefully framed story makes his exceptional departure appear straightforward and deserved.
Unspoken circumstances
The ceremony does not discuss his affair, the Commander’s household, or the uncertainty of the restructuring. Public memory selects what can be safely celebrated.
The Secret Disperses

No Shared Witness
Comrades scattered
Those who knew about the affair and those who did not are sent in different directions. The division no longer exists as a community able to preserve a common account.
Private history unrecorded
Wu Dawang’s personal story sinks without trace in the wider institutional transition. The secret is protected, but that protection also erases its meaning from public record.
A Memory at the Gate

The Past Reappears
A return to Liu Lian
Wu Dawang visits her provincial compound, bringing the sign from their former household. The attempt to reconnect is an act of memory against years of silence.
No official account
The novel gives no record of what Liu Lian does with the object after he leaves it. The past survives privately, outside the institutional narrative that had erased it.
